A Field Guide to Understanding God's Word
God calls every believer to diligently study His Word as a workman seeking His approval.
We are not just reading Scripture for inspiration, we are studying it for transformation.
We are not just studying it Scripture for information, we are examining it for application.
Our study should lead to obedience that pleases God, not just knowledge that impresses others.

Understanding hermeneutics is essential because it safeguards us from error and leads us to truth.
Hermeneutics is the method by which we determine what the Bible means, not just what it says.
Interpretation is intended. The question is, are we doing it faithfully?
Right interpretation requires recognizing the Bible’s context, genre, and authorial intent.
We must handle Scripture with precision.
We must practice exegesis or drawing truth from the text.
Exegesis honors God’s voice by asking, “What does God mean here?”
Observation -> Interpretation -> Application
Eisegesis distorts God’s Word by asking, “What do I want this to mean?”
Idea -> Application -> Text
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.1 Samuel 18:1-4
I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.2 Samuel 1:26
We must extract truth from the Word, not impose our beliefs on the Word.
Mishandling Scripture is spiritually dangerous and leads to confusion, deception, and judgment.
Satan himself misquoted Scripture to tempt Jesus. This is proof that misuse of Scripture is satanic.
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.Psalm 91:11-12
And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.Matthew 4:6
Speaking on behalf of God and saying things that He did not say is a form of blasphemy.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD. They say still unto them that despise me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you.Jeremiah 23:16-17
I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.Jeremiah 23:21-22
False teachers aren’t just wrong, they are dangerous because they mislead others which has eternal consequences.
As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.2 Peter 3:16
Misuse of Scripture is not neutral. It dishonors God, misleads both believers and unbelievers and emboldens error.
The goal of interpretation is not to fit Scripture to our lives, but to align our lives to God’s truth.
God’s Word is authoritative. It tells us how to live, think, believe, and worship.
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.James 1:22
Any interpretation that justifies sin or ignores context must be rejected.
If the Bible only affirms you and never confronts you, you’re probably reading it wrong.
Right interpretation humbles us, transforms us, and calls us to submission under God’s authority.
Prioritize the study of the Bible like a skilled laborer.
Put some good tools in your toolbox and learn to use them.
Use tools of interpretation (context, genre, audience, original language) to let Scripture speak.
Avoid emotional or cultural lenses that twist the Bible into personal opinion or private interpretation.
Test every teaching by Scripture rightly interpreted.
Commit to live what you learn, even when it’s uncomfortable or countercultural.
