Strong & Courageous Message 10 of 11
Courage Never Retires
Pastor Anthony King· March 8, 2026
Joshua 14
A sermon on Joshua 14 and Caleb's lifelong faithfulness: courage today is anchored in God's past promises. After decades of waiting, Caleb asks for the hardest ground, trusting God more than his own strength, a reminder that wholehearted obedience never goes out of season.
“And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.”
Joshua 14:1
Courage in the present is anchored in God’s past promises.
We stand firm today when we remember what God has already spoken.
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:Psalm 103:2
Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.1 Thessalonians 5:24
Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)Hebrews 10:23
God honors those who stand on His Word when others melt in fear.
Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice; Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it: But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.Numbers 14:22-24
Long obedience keeps its strength through years of waiting.
God can keep us spiritually strong even as our years increase.
But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.Proverbs 4:18
For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.2 Corinthians 4:16
Time doesn’t erase God’s promise, it trains your heart to receive it rightly.
That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.Hebrews 6:12
Faith asks God for hard ground because it trusts His help.
Real courage doesn’t avoid hard places when God has spoken about them.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.2 Timothy 1:7
Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.Joshua 1:7
Faith counts on the LORD’s presence more than on personal ability.
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?Romans 8:31
God gives lasting inheritance to those who wholly follow Him.
Whole-hearted obedience is the path to God’s best, not half-hearted religion.
For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.2 Chronicles 16:9
Our true inheritance now is found in Jesus, who keeps and completes what God has promised.
To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,1 Peter 1:4
When fears arise, remind yourself of the promises of God.
Real warriors never retire. Ask God for fresh ground to take.
Don’t look for an exit on the hard path. Choose obedience and courage, because God is with you.
Give God your whole heart. Don’t settle for a convenient version of Christianity.
Because God always keeps His word, you never have to stop following Him with your whole heart.
1And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them. 2By lot was their inheritance, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe. 3For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and an half tribe on the other side Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave none inheritance among them. 4For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance. 5As the LORD commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land. 6Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea. 7Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart. 8Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God. 9And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God. 10And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old. 11As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in. 12Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said. 13And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance. 14Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel. 15And the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war. Joshua 14
