Easter Sunday 2023 Message 01 of 02
Sunday AM: Do You Believe?
Pastor Anthony King· April 9, 2023
Luke 24:1-12
Join us as we discuss the historical and theological implications of this pivotal moment in Christian history, the resurrection of Jesus. We explore the significance of the resurrection for believers and skeptics alike, and the ways in which it continues to shape our understanding of faith and spirituality today.
“Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.”
Luke 24:1
Who or what you believe determines the trajectory of your life.
Belief determines behavior.
When presented with information, we must accept it as true or reject it as false.
The Angel’s Story
Jesus was delivered to sinful men.
Jesus was crucified.
Jesus rose again the third day.
The Meaning of the Story
Jesus was delivered to sinful men. This was proof that He was the Messiah, the prophesied One.
But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts. I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother’s belly. Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.Psalm 22:6-18
Jesus was crucified. His blood was required as payment for our sins.
Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.Hebrews 9:20-22
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.Romans 5:9
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:Colossians 1:14
Jesus rose again the third day. He conquered death and gives the power to us to live a new life in Him and eternal life through Him.
Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body. When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.John 2:18-22
Deniers
“There might have been a historical Jesus, but He wasn’t God and He didn’t rise from the grave.”
Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.1 Corinthians 15:12-14
Doubters
“I don’t see how that could actually happen. I’d believe it if you could prove it.”
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.Galatians 2:16
Disciples
“I believe that Jesus has died and rose again as payment for my sins. He is the only way to Heaven. Now I want to live my life with Him and for Him until I see Him in eternity.”
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.Romans 10:9-10
There is a difference in believing in a historical figure named Jesus and believing on Jesus alone for eternal life.
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.James 2:19
1Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. 2And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. 3And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. 4And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: 5And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? 6He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, 7Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. 8And they remembered his words, 9And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest. 10It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles. 11And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not. 12Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. Luke 24:1-12
