From Empty to Full
Boaz’s gracious care is obvious.
Ruth took in 29-50 pounds of grain.
This would never be possible for a gleaner.
The average worker would take 1-2 pounds per day.
Ruth’s kindness and generosity are evident.
She shared her gleanings.
She shared her lunch.
Naomi recognizes the goodness of God.
She sees the grace of God (hesed) at work through Boaz.
Naomi has had a change of heart toward God and now recognizes His grace, even in her suffering.
Redeem means to buy back. As kinsman-redeemer, Boaz could:
Fulfill the duty of preserving the name of the dead by marrying Ruth.
Avenge the death of a murdered relative.
The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: when he meeteth him, he shall slay him.Numbers 35:19
Marry a childless widow of a deceased brother.
If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband’s brother unto her. And it shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel. And if the man like not to take his brother’s wife, then let his brother’s wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband’s brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband’s brother. Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and if he stand to it, and say, I like not to take her; Then shall his brother’s wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother’s house. And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe loosed.Deuteronomy 25:5-10
Buy back family land that had been sold.
If thy brother be waxen poor, and hath sold away some of his possession, and if any of his kin come to redeem it, then shall he redeem that which his brother sold.Leviticus 25:25
Buy a family member who had been sold as a slave.
And if a sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy brother that dwelleth by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger’s family: After that he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may redeem him: Either his uncle, or his uncle’s son, may redeem him, or any that is nigh of kin unto him of his family may redeem him; or if he be able, he may redeem himself.Leviticus 25:47-49
Look after needy and helpless members of the family.
And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner; that he may live with thee.Leviticus 25:35
Naomi saw Boaz as a protector for Ruth and encouraged her to follow after him.
Ruth working through the harvest season would have lasted 7-8 weeks.
The Moabite is living as an Israelite.
The Gospel Foreshadowed
We are invited to eat at the Master’s table. There is more than enough for all of our needs and wants.
God’s provision for me is extravagant in response to who I am and what I need.
God’s grace changes our disposition towards others as our faith is strengthened.
I was an outcast with no hope. Now I am brought near, redeemed and given a new name.
God has given me a freedom, not to do as I please, but freedom to be what I was designed to be.
17So she gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that she had gleaned: and it was about an ephah of barley. 18And she took it up, and went into the city: and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth, and gave to her that she had reserved after she was sufficed. 19And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou gleaned to day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought, and said, The man’s name with whom I wrought to day is Boaz. 20And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinsmen. 21And Ruth the Moabitess said, He said unto me also, Thou shalt keep fast by my young men, until they have ended all my harvest. 22And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter in law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, that they meet thee not in any other field. 23So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law.
