THE CHURCH: HONORING JESUS IN BAPTISM
July 12, 2020 Acts 2:37-48
Baptism: To plunge, to dunk, to submerge
Biblical baptism always takes place:
By immersion After salvation Under the authority of a local church
Baptism is a testimony.
It testifies of salvation.
And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.Acts 8:36-37
It testifies of a desire to follow Jesus in obedience.
It testifies as a visible, public, tangible symbol of an inward commitment.
Baptism is about obedience.
Jesus was baptized as an example.
Jesus commissioned us to baptize believers in His name.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:Matthew 28:19
Baptism is about identification.
Baptism identifies us with Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection.
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.Romans 6:3-4
Baptism identifies us with fellow believers.
There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.Ephesians 4:4-6
Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.Acts 2:41
Baptism identifies us with a body of doctrine.
And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.Acts 19:1-5
Baptism is given to the local church.
Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are two ordinances given to the local church to honor Jesus.
Baptism never has and never will save anyone.
Sacrament: a means of attaining grace.
A False View of Baptism
Baptismal Regeneration: The incorrect belief that baptism is the means of attaining saving grace.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:Ephesians 2:8
Since the church is the keeper of baptism, and baptism is a means of salvation, the church then becomes the keeper of salvation.
