Me, Myself and Mine Message 04 of 08
Loving Others Over Ourselves
Pastor Anthony King· March 16, 2025
1 John 3:16-18
“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”
1 John 3:16
Loving others is the antidote to selfishness and evidence of God’s love in us.
Jesus demonstrated true love by laying down His life for us, setting the ultimate example of selflessness.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.John 15:13
We are called to imitate Jesus’ love by laying down our lives for others.
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.Philippians 2:3-4
True love is expressed through tangible actions, not just words.
Possessing material wealth yet refusing to help a brother in need reveals a lack of God’s love within us.
If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?James 2:15-16
Compassionate giving reflects God’s character and fulfills His command to love one another.
He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.Proverbs 19:17
Love is action-oriented and rooted in truth.
Love does more than talk. Love rolls up its sleeves and does.
In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.Proverbs 14:23
True love is grounded in truth, aligning with God’s Word and His will.
Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.Romans 12:9
Sacrificial love reflects our spiritual transformation as children of God.
Sacrificial acts demonstrate that we have passed from death to life because we genuinely care for others.
We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.1 John 3:14
Failing to show such love reveals spiritual immaturity or even spiritual death.
They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.Titus 1:16
Examine your heart for selfish tendencies and ask God to cultivate a spirit of selflessness within you.
Look for tangible ways to serve those in need, whether through making a meal, praying with them, spending time with them or providing a word of encouragement.
Commit to loving others consistently through actions, even when it is inconvenient or costly.
Anchor your acts of service in Truth, ensuring they align with Scripture and glorify God rather than seeking human recognition.
Do good for others and don’t tell anyone about it.
16Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? 18My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:16-18
