The Promised King
Pastor Anthony King· December 8, 2024
2 Samuel 7:12-16; Luke 1:30-33
“And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.”
2 Samuel 7:12
Davidic Covenant: God’s promise to David that his lineage would establish an eternal kingdom, culminating in the reign of the Messiah. This covenant guarantees that David’s throne will endure forever, ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the eternal King.
God established an everlasting covenant with David, promising a royal lineage.
God promised to establish David’s kingdom through his offspring.
And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.2 Samuel 7:12
The Lord pledged to be a father to David’s heir and maintain His mercy.
I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:2 Samuel 7:14
The Davidic covenant pointed to a future King whose reign would have no end.
God promised that David’s throne would be established forever.
And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.2 Samuel 7:16
This eternal kingdom transcended Solomon’s reign, foreshadowing the Messiah.
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.Isaiah 9:7
The angel Gabriel announced to Mary the fulfillment of God’s promise to David.
Mary was chosen to bear the long-awaited Son of David.
And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.Luke 1:30-31
Jesus was declared to be great and the Son of the Highest.
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:Luke 1:32
Jesus’ eternal reign fulfills and surpasses the Davidic covenant.
Christ’s kingdom will have no end, as promised to David centuries before.
And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.Luke 1:33
Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s covenant with David.
Remember God always keeps His promises.
If Jesus is King, we should obey Him.
We have daily hope knowing that our King is for us.
Share the good news of our King with others.
12And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 13He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: 15But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. 16And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. 2 Samuel 7:12-16
30And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Luke 1:30-33
