When Suffering Speaks Louder Than Words
Pastor Anthony King· April 12, 2026
Acts 16:25-34
A sermon on Acts 16:25-34: how we respond to suffering can speak louder than words. Worship and faith in hard times point others to the Gospel, as they did in the Philippian jail, and God uses those moments to awaken hearts and bring salvation to whole households.
“And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.”
Acts 16:25
God uses our worship in suffering to reach those who are watching.
Our prayers and praise in trials point people to the real, living God.
A Psalm of David, when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed. I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.Psalm 34:1-3
Joyful faith under pressure proves the Gospel we preach is powerful and true.
But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places; And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.Philippians 1:12-14
God can shake any situation to wake a sinner to their need.
God can interrupt a person’s life in a moment to get their attention about eternity.
And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.Acts 9:3-5
Hitting rock bottom often becomes the doorway where God confronts a sinner with reality.
And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,Luke 15:15-18
Trials are meant to drive us to the heart of the Father where we find peace and comfort.
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.2 Corinthians 1:3-4
The right response to a shaken heart is a simple, urgent question: “What must I do to be saved?”
Conviction leads a sinner to stop arguing and start asking how to be made right with God.
Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?Acts 2:36-37
A truly convicted heart stops making excuses and admits its desperate need for mercy.
For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.Psalm 51:3-4
Salvation is by believing on the Lord Jesus, and that same Gospel can set off a chain reaction.
Jesus saves anyone who truly believes on Him alone for forgiveness and eternal life.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.Romans 10:9-10
When one person believes, the Gospel naturally flows to their home and changes families.
When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.2 Timothy 1:5
Someone around you is always listening and watching. Make Jesus look good.
See suffering as an open door to lovingly point people to Jesus.
Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit at work in the lives of people around you. Someone is asking the right questions.
As we reach one person, the Gospel spreads to households and changes family trees.
25And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. 26And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed. 27And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. 28But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. 29Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, 30And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 32And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. 33And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. 34And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house. Acts 16:25-34
