Going the Distance
Pastor Anthony King· February 4, 2024
Colossians 1:9-11
**POOR QUALITY AUDIO WARNING** "Going the Distance," explores the eternal commitment between God and believers, emphasizing the importance of finishing strong in the Christian faith. Drawing from biblical verses, we dive into the need to understand and fulfill God's expectations, embrace wisdom, remember His grace, and rely on His strength to lead a fruitful and enduring life, being encouraged to run our own race and show grace and longsuffering to others.
“For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;”
Colossians 1:9
When God adopts you into His family, it is for eternity.
By the same token, the commitment we make to Him should not be short-sighted.
Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.Joshua 24:14-15
It should be the desire of every Christian to finish well.
God is less concerned with how you began, but very concerned with how you finish.
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.1 Timothy 1:15-16
How do we finish strong?
Know what God expects of us and do it.
Become a student of wisdom.
Never forget the grace that God has given you.
Commit to a life of fruitfulness.
Lean on God’s strength, not our own.
Settle in for the long haul.
We must become comfortable being uncomfortable.
This means finding a manageable, steady pace.
You must run your own race.
For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.2 Corinthians 10:12
We must be gracious and longsuffering with others.
I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.Ephesians 4:1-3
What causes us to quit the race?
Sin
Selfishness
Self-confidence
Worldliness
Desire for comfort
Disappointment with others
Pride
9For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Colossians 1:9-11
