A Study of Biblical Fasting
Spiritual fasting entails reducing the intake of food and replacing these activities with the exercise of prayer and preoccupation with spiritual concerns.
Biblical fasting always deals with food. The Greek word which is translated “fasting” literally means one who has not eaten, one who is empty, one who is hungry.
Normal: in which there is no intake of food for a prescribed period of time, though there may be an intake of liquids;
Partial: in which the diet is limited, though some food is allowed; ILL: Daniel Fast
Absolute: in which there is a total abstinence from food and liquids in all forms.
Fasting proves that we are willing to make sacrifices.
Fasting proves that we are personally invested.
Fasting proves that our trust is in God alone.
We must give direction.
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.Deuteronomy 6:4-9
We must teach them to love God.
Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.Joel 1:3
We must teach them God’s Word.
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.Proverbs 22:6
We must teach them God’s Word diligently.
We must provide protection.
Satan wants to ruin our children.
We must protect their minds.
We must protect their hearts.
We must protect their innocence.
We must fight for the children of others.
We must model dedication.
We must live a real, radical, strong, resolute faith.
The greatest gift you can give your children is a legacy of faith.
We place our children in great danger when we have a half-hearted or nonexistent commitment to the things of God.
21Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. 22For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him. 23So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us. Ezra 8:21-23
