A Study of Biblical Fasting
Spiritual fasting entails reducing the intake of food and replacing these activities with the exercise of prayer and preoccupation with spiritual concerns.
Biblical fasting always deals with food. The Greek word which is translated “fasting” literally means one who has not eaten, one who is empty, one who is hungry.
Three types of fast are generally recognized:
Normal: in which there is no intake of food for a prescribed period of time, though there may be an intake of liquids;
Partial: in which the diet is limited, though some food is allowed; ILL: Daniel Fast
Absolute: in which there is a total abstinence from food and liquids in all forms.
There was a clear call to repentance.
Our city doesn’t need a change in politicians or a change of legislation, it needs repentance.
We are the messengers of the Gospel.
How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?Romans 10:14
Our message is not our message, but the Gospel message.
Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.Jonah 3:2
Repentance was demonstrated in fasting and humility.
True repentance brings about real change.
There was a brokenness and mourning over sin.
For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.Psalm 51:3
The people of Ninevah were concerned about their city, not just themselves.
Residents of Ninevah saw the need and led others to repentance.
Their belief moved them to action.
There was a groundswell amongst the people for repentance that reached the king.
We must spread the word of the coming judgment and the Savior who can deliver.
How does your belief move you?
God spared the city.
Fasting for my city might not bring about the change I want in my city, but it will bring about a change in me.
1And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying, 2Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. 3So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey. 4And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. 5So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. 6For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: 8But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. 9Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? 10And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
