This is Huikala: Love
Pastor Anthony King· October 11, 2026
Matthew 22:36-40
A sermon on Matthew 22:36-40: loving God means giving Him your whole heart and putting Him first in everything. Our love for God shows in how we love others, and as a church we live it out by giving, serving and investing in people so the love of Jesus makes a difference in Honolulu.
“Master, which is the great commandment in the law?”
Matthew 22:36
Love for God asks for all of you, not part of you.
God wants your heart first, because everything else in your life flows out of it.
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.Proverbs 4:23
A divided heart cannot love God the way He commanded us to love Him.
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.Matthew 6:24
Love for God is first, and nothing is allowed to take that place.
Whatever we put ahead of God becomes an idol, even when the thing itself is good.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.Exodus 20:3
When God has first place, He puts everything else in its right place.
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.Matthew 6:33
Love for people is the proof that we love God.
We cannot claim to love a God we have never seen while ignoring people we see every day.
If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?1 John 4:20
Loving your neighbor means giving him the same care you give yourself.
Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.Matthew 7:12
Love is not one duty among many, it is what every other duty is made of.
Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.Romans 13:8
Without love, even our best religious work adds up to nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.1 Corinthians 13:3
Give God the first part of your day before you give the world the rest of it.
Name the one thing competing for first place in your heart and hand it back to Jesus this week.
Love the person actually in front of you, not the person you wish were in front of you.
Let love be the reason behind every dollar you give, every hour you serve, and every person you invest in at Huikala.
36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Matthew 22:36-40
