“And he said, A certain man had two sons:”
Luke 15:11
The series
Finding Hope and Assurance in Jesus
prodigal: spending money or resources freely and recklessly; wastefully extravagant:
The story isn’t about the son. It’s about a man who had two sons.
The son makes a rude, selfish, disrespectful request.
Inheritance comes after the father’s death.
He doesn’t want a relationship with the father, only wants the father’s stuff.
This is a public, shameful embarrassment to the father.
The son undervalues and even devalues what the father has given him.
The party begins, but doesn’t last forever.
When you chase after sin, there will always come a famine.
You will be an obedient son of the father or you will be a slave to the world.
The emptiness apart from the father is insatiable.
The son recognized the father could care for his every need.
The son recognized the generosity and compassion of the father.
How does this relate to our eternal security?
God is not a father to the unbeleivers.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:John 1:12
Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.John 8:42-44
Our relationship with the Father is not based on worth, but grace.
The wayward son must come to himself.
1. My father has everything I need. 2. I am dying.
The father was waiting, as he knew he would return.
Despite his poor choices, the son recognized his sonship.
The son returned, the Father handled the cleanup effort.
The father removed the smelly, pig-stained clothes and dressed him as a son.
The robe was a ceremonial one that would be appropriate for a guest of honor.
The ring signified authority.
The sandals were those only a free man would wear.
The son was never asked to make restitution. There’s no process of reconciliation, restitution or remorse, only grace.
He didn’t become a son again when he repented, he simply restored his relationship with his father.
When we sin against God, we do not lose our sonship. We simply become disobedient, unruly children that hurt the heart of their Father.
Once we return to the Father, He will come running to us.
The father rejoices at the return of his son. There is no shame.
11And he said, A certain man had two sons: 12And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. 13And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. 14And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. 15And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. 17And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, 19And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. 20And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. 21And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. 22But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: 23And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: 24For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. Luke 15:11-24
