Greater Than Message 02 of 04
Greater Than Our Needs
Pastor Anthony King· December 7, 2025
Luke 2:25-32
A Christmas sermon on Luke 2:25-32: Jesus is greater than our needs, because salvation is found in Him alone. Through Christ, God shines His light to all nations, keeping His promises to Israel and extending grace to the whole world, and those who rest in His finished work know the peace and joy of His salvation.
“And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.”
Luke 2:25
Salvation is seen in Jesus alone.
Salvation is not an idea or a plan but a Person. God’s saving work culminates in Jesus Himself.
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.Acts 4:12
Jesus came to seek and to save the lost. This makes saving sinners His mission and identity.
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.Luke 19:10
Jesus came to save sinners, demonstrating that salvation is God’s mercy in a Person, not human effort.
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.1 Timothy 1:15
Salvation was prepared by God for everyone.
God set forth Jesus as a propitiation, planned and revealed at the right time to justify those who believe.
Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.Romans 3:25-26
God sent Jesus “in the fulness of time” showing salvation is God’s prepared initiative, not human invention.
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.Galatians 4:4-5
Salvation in Jesus is light for the nations and glory for Israel.
Those who walked in darkness have seen a great light. This light is fulfilled in Jesus.
The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.Isaiah 9:2
In Jesus, the blessing promised to Abraham comes to the Gentiles through faith.
That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.Galatians 3:14
Salvation answers our deepest need with peace.
The Lord lifts up the light of His countenance upon believers and gives peace.
There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.Psalm 4:6-8
The peace of God which passes all understanding guards hearts and minds in Jesus.
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:6-7
If you’ve never been saved, get saved today. Receive Jesus personally as God’s prepared salvation, trusting Him as the only answer to guilt, death, and separation from God.
Embrace the Gospel’s global mission by praying, giving, and witnessing so the light of Jesus reaches every nation and neighbor.
Rest in Christ’s finished work, not performance, and let that peace guide your choices and give you hope in facing eternity.
Remember when we talk about peace and joy at Christmastime, it’s really about the peace and joy that we get from knowing Jesus as Savior.
25And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. 26And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 28Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 30For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. Luke 2:25-32
