Typology Message 13 of 19
The Struck Rock and the Battle of the Amalekites
Pastor Anthony King· March 10, 2024
Exodus 17:1-13
“And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.”
Exodus 17:1
The Struck Rock
The rock would supply more than enough for the need of the children of Israel in the wilderness.
Jesus is the Rock in which supplies more than enough for the need of a people wandering in the wilderness of sin.
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.1 Corinthians 10:1-4
The rock was struck once to bring forth water. Jesus would be smitten once as sacrifice once for all.
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.Hebrews 9:28
Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;Hebrews 10:8
This water from the rock gave life to the children of Israel. Jesus offers us Himself as the water from which we will never thirst again.
But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.John 4:14
Despite their murmurings and complaining against God, He still met their need. Despite our rebellion against God, He still meets our need with His grace.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.Romans 5:8
Moses was asked to strike the rock by faith as provision for the children of Israel. We are asked to trust by faith the smitten Son of God as provision for our sins.
Moses makes a grave error in Numbers 20 when he strikes the rock a second time.
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink. And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him. And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also. And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.Numbers 20:7-12
The Raised Hands of Moses
Moses himself was a type of Christ. Here we see Moses as the intercessor, pleading with God on behalf of His people. Jesus is our intercessor, pleading His blood on our behalf.
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;1 Timothy 2:5
Moses went to the top of a hill and his hands were outstretched for victory, so Jesus went to the hill of Golgotha and outstretched His arms on the cross to purchase our victory.
Moses held the rod of God as a symbol of God’s authority. Jesus was the Son of God, given all authority.
As Moses became weary, he was given a stone to rest on. Jesus is called the cornerstone and is the rock upon which the church is established. And Jesus is never weary.
And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;Ephesians 2:20
This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.Acts 4:11
God is always looking to provide and meet the needs of His children.
God gives specific instructions that may seem like technicalities or inconsequential. They are not.
The end does not justify the means. Pragmatism does not honor God.
When you are leaning on the grace of God you win. When you try to lean on your own strength or your own understanding, you lose.
Sometimes even the strongest of us need help.
1And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink. 2Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD? 3And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst? 4And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me. 5And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go. 6Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not? 8Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim. 9And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand. 10So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
