Typology Message 01 of 19
Introduction To Typology
Pastor Anthony King· September 3, 2023
Luke 24:12-27
“Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.”
Luke 24:12
The Old Testament is full of Jesus, and this is God’s design.
The story told by the Old Testament is full of Christological significance and God’s plan escalates to the defining moment in human history, the appearing of our Savior.
If the Bible is the story of God’s redemption through Jesus, He wouldn’t leave Jesus missing in 77% of His Word. He would fill every page with Jesus.
And since God loves the Son whom he sends to redeem us, it is God’s delight to fill the Old Testament with the Son he loves.
Typology involves recognizing similarities and connections between the Old Testament and the New Testament, where certain people, places, objects, or events in the Old Testament are seen as representing or anticipating corresponding realities in the New Testament.
Typology is God-ordained, author-intended historical correspondence and escalation in significance between people, events, and institutions across the Bible’s redemptive-historical story.
typos: “a blow, hitting, stamp, impression”
Types will have a type (promise-shaped pattern), antitype (fulfillment) and Christological significance.
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.Romans 5:14
The author of Scripture is the Holy Spirit.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:2 Timothy 3:16
The human authors would have had a very limited understanding of future events.
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.2 Peter 1:21
Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.Numbers 21:7-9
Types are ultimately designed by God to forecast Christological realities.
God tells us of His Son in direct and indirect ways.
Direct prophecies are clear and understood.
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.Isaiah 53:10-11
Indirect prophecies are less explicit and can be hidden in plain sight.
Biblical typology always points to Jesus.
Not to Moses, Mary or anyone else.
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;Colossians 1:16-19
Typology must coexist with good exegesis.
Exegesis: critical explanation or interpretation of a text, especially of scripture; Literally “drawing meaning out of”
Eisegesis: the process of interpreting text in such a way as to introduce one’s own presuppositions, agendas or biases.
Typology is an attempt to interpret what is there in the text, not what is not there in the text.
Typological exegesis assumes a divine sovereignty over history.
Typology is exegesis across the canon of Scripture.
God never intended to create multiple disjointed stories, but one beautiful story that crescendos with His ultimate glory with His people for eternity.
Our goal of the study of typology is that Jesus would be clearer and more beautiful than ever.
And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?Luke 24:32
12Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. 13And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. 14And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. 16But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. 17And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? 18And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? 19And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. 21But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. 22Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; 23And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. 24And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not. 25Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? 27And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Luke 24:12-27
