“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
Romans 5:12
Typology requires to see the similarities of types that point us to Jesus, while at the same time seeing how short all falls from accurately portraying the greatness of the perfect and complete fulfillment of Jesus.
Adam is a representative of the human race. Jesus is a representative of the Godhead.
Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.Romans 5:18
For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.Colossians 2:9
Both Adam and Jesus’ actions affected mankind as a whole. Since their responses to God were opposite, the resulting effects were opposite in nature.
Adam was referred to as the son of God. Jesus is the son of God.
Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.Luke 3:38
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.John 1:14
Adam’s life brought death. Jesus’ death brings life.
In Adam, all die. In Christ, all shall be made alive.
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:Ephesians 2:5-6
Death came upon all members of the first family because their father died. Those who belong to the second family live because the Last Adam has been made alive.
And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.1 Corinthians 15:45
Adam’s disobedience brought condemnation and the curse of sin on mankind. Jesus’ obedience brought justification, reversed the curse and brought righteousness.
For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.Romans 5:19
Adam’s sin is imputed to all men. Jesus’ righteousness is imputed to all who believe.
And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;Romans 4:21-24
Adam’s choice brought isolation, loneliness, violence and hatred. Jesus’ choice brings true life, fellowship with God, the love of God and connection to others through Him.
We are no longer slaves to sin, because Jesus has liberated us.
If such a great price was paid to liberate me from sin, why would I find pleasure there?
This new life is available to all who believe. Who do I know that needs to know?
12Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13(For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. 15But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. 16And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. 17For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 18Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 19For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. 20Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:12-21
