The Passover as Protection
The Lamb and the Blood.
The lamb must be one year old.
Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:Exodus 12:5
The lamb had to be without blemish - no physical defects of any kind, and in good health.
The male lamb or goat was chosen on the 10th of the month, but sacrificed on the 14th.
And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.Exodus 12:6
The lamb must be sacrificed at evening.
The lamb’s blood was to be placed on the doorposts, and the mantle overhead.
And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.Exodus 12:7
The lamb was to be roasted whole, without removing its entrails, or dismembering its body.
Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.Exodus 12:9
Anything leftover from the sacrifice must be burned in the morning.
And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.Exodus 12:10
They were to eat it while fully dressed, prepared to depart at any moment.
And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD’s passover.Exodus 12:11
Typological element #2: The Bread
The bread was unleavened.
Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.1 Corinthians 5:6-8
The bread was striped & pierced.
Typological Element #3: The Bitter Herbs
Typological Element #4: The Cup
The first cup “toasted” was taken at the start of the meal and is referred to as the cup of sanctification:
The second cup “toasted” was referred to as the cup of deliverance and was taken after the Haggadah, or the retelling of the Exodus of Egypt:
The third cup “toasted” was referred to as the cup of redemption, and was taken immediately after the meal was finished.
The fourth cup “toasted” was referred to as the cup of praise, and was taken after finishing a hymn at the very end of the meal.
Applications from the Passover.
Jesus is the true lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.
The Passover festival reminds us that we are called out from this world to become a new people.
We must keep pressing onward in service and obedience to the Lord, expecting our soon reunification with Jesus.
