“And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho.”
Joshua 4:19
The simple is made wise.
The previous generation was punished, their children saw those mistakes and were made wise.
When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge.Proverbs 21:11
Knowledge of doing the right thing turns into wisdom when we apply it.
A reminder to remember God’s faithfulness.
The next generation is watching.
Even a negative influence is reversible if you are saved by Jesus Christ.
You are shaping someone’s view of what a bible believing Christian looks like.
It’s difficult to say how good God has been with a heart that doesn’t obey Him.
But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments, And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.Nehemiah 9:16-17
When my heart is rebellious, I am no longer submitting to God’s authority.
We trick ourselves into believing if I don’t acknowledge what God wants me to do, everything can still be ok.
The fear of God and the motivation for obedience.
God is to be feared above any and all circumstances. He is All-powerful.
Then believed they his words; they sang his praise. They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel: But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.Psalm 106:12-15
One of the most beautiful parts of our All-powerful God is Him giving us exactly what we need.
But one of the scariest parts of God’s power for a Christian is Him giving us over to what we want.
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.Galatians 5:1
Our love for God begins with faith in Him because of what He has done and what He will do. For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments: And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God. —Psalm 78:5-9
This confidence in God of our salvation fills our heart with joy.
I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever. Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. —Psalm 145:1-4
Be made wise when you see a scorner punished.
Reflect on the faithfulness of God.
Tell your children and/or others how God was faithful and where He brought you from, often.
19And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho. 20And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal. 21And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones? 22Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. 23For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over: 24That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever. Joshua 4:19-24
