The series
A Study in James
Salvation happens the moment that we exhibit faith in Jesus and repentance for our sins.
Sanctification continues throughout our life and is a result of obeying the Word and yielding to the Spirit.
Visible Christian growth is not optional, it’s an expectation.
Healthy things grow.
Holy Spirit change in the life of a Christian begins on the inside and then is manifest outwardly.
Attempts at change without the Holy Spirit, simply results in behavior modification.
The crowning achievement of self-control is the ability to control what one says.
A mark of Christian maturity is the control of the tongue.
To the chief Musician, even to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David. I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.Psalm 39:1
For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:1 Peter 3:10
Control of the tongue requires a sanctified and submitted heart.
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:1 Peter 2:1-2
Lack of control of the tongue exposes a corrupt and carnal heart.
If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.James 1:26
To control the tongue means to also control the heart and mind.
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.Luke 6:45
The tongue sets a direction for our lives.
He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.Proverbs 13:3
1My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. 2For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. 3Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. 4Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 5Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 6And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 7For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? 12Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. James 3:1-12
