A Study in James
Our quest for the pleasure of this world is idolatry.
Friendship with the world is open hostility and antagonistic to God.
Our selfish, self-centered pride repels God.
Antitossomai (is opposed) was used as a military term depicting a full army ready for battle. God is in full battle array, as it were, against the proud, because pride is the basic sin from which all others issue.
Pride is the sinful desire to elevate oneself. This word literally means one who shows himself above other people.
For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.Luke 14:11
While pride will manifest itself outwardly at times, it is a sickness and condition of the heart.
And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.Isaiah 13:11
Pride is the root of all drama and discord.
Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.Proverbs 13:10
Pride could be regarded as the root of all sin.
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.Proverbs 16:18
Our humility draws God closer and creates a pathway for His grace.
He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat.Proverbs 28:25
Humility requires us to create a value structure where God is always greater.
My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.Psalm 34:2
Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.
Humility gives God the opportunity to exalt me.
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.Matthew 23:12
Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.Matthew 18:4
Humility is the antidote to all drama and discord.
Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.Proverbs 13:10
Humility could be regarded as the root of all righteousness.
Pride destroys everything it touches.
Humility brings peace and God’s blessings.
You can humble yourself or God will do it for you.
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. James 4:6
