Things Above Message 14 of 17
Making Strangers Our Family
Pastor Anthony King· October 12, 2025
1 Peter 4:7-10
his sermon from 1 Peter 4:7–10 teaches that true Christian hospitality means making strangers into family by showing the love of Christ. Welcoming others into our homes and lives reflects God’s grace, who first welcomed us through Jesus. When believers serve and love others selflessly, they display the Gospel in action and point people to the heart of God.
“But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.”
1 Peter 4:7
Hospitality (philoxenoi): to make a stranger your brother
If there is any place where one should feel truly welcome, it ought to be among the body of Christ.
God calls believers to actively show love through opening their homes and lives to others as a display of unconditional love.
Jesus teaches that serving and welcoming others is serving Him.
And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.Matthew 25:40
When we invite others in, we put the Gospel on display, showing how God brought outsiders into His household.
Hospitality demonstrates God’s grace.
That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.Ephesians 2:12-13
Hospitality displays God’s love.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:John 1:12
We exhibit our joy-filled Christian generosity by inviting others in.
We are challenged to offer hospitality freely and cheerfully, not with reluctance or grumbling.
Do all things without murmurings and disputings:Philippians 2:14
We serve Jesus by serving others.
Hospitality is simply living like Jesus.
Believers are called to love one another as Jesus loved, demonstrating sacrificial care.
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.John 13:34
Love in action shows non-believers how Jesus-followers live.
That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.John 17:21
Inviting someone into your home and life is selfless. Keeping others away is selfish.
Ask God for the strength to welcome others with joy, letting go of hesitation and being thankful for the chance to serve.
Use acts of hospitality to introduce neighbors, coworkers, and friends to the reality of Jesus through practical care and kindness.
Remember that every act of unseen service for others, done in Jesus’ name, honors God and lays up rewards in Heaven.
7But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. 8And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. 9Use hospitality one to another without grudging. 10As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 1 Peter 4:7-10
