Living in the Light of Redemption
Pastor Anthony King· February 2, 2025
Colossians 1:13-14
A sermon from Colossians on how we should live because we have been redeemed.
“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:”
Colossians 1:13-14
We are rescued from the kingdom of darkness.
Our deliverance from darkness signifies a transfer from the power of sin and Satan to the kingdom of Jesus.
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:Ephesians 5:8
The deliverance from darkness is an act of divine grace and power.
To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.Acts 26:18
We are redeemed and forgiven through Jesus’ blood.
Redemption is freely given to us but involves a costly purchase, Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross.
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.Hebrews 9:12
Forgiveness is a central component of redemption, freeing us from sin’s penalty.
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;Ephesians 1:7
Redemption means we are free from our sin. Don’t go back to captivity.
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?Romans 6:1-2
Our identity is reshaped by our transfer into God’s kingdom.
Being part of God’s kingdom redefines our identity as children of God.
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:1 Peter 2:9
Our citizenship in God’s kingdom implies a new allegiance and purpose. We have a new King here.
For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:Philippians 3:20
Our purpose is to reflect God’s light in a dark world.
Since we have been redeemed, we are called to be lights in the world.
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.Matthew 5:14-16
Being the light of the world is simply being a reflection of the True Light.
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.John 8:12
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.Romans 7:18
As children of light, we stand against darkness.
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.Ephesians 5:8-11
That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;Philippians 2:15
Make sure you’re living in the light.
Stay close to the Light. You are simply a reflector.
I cannot light the entire world, but I can light my corner.
Don’t get discouraged by the darkness. Be the light.
13Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Colossians 1:13-14
