A sermon on Colossians 3:1-4 and how setting your heart on things above transforms your life and perspective. It calls believers to live for Christ's kingdom, die to self, and find true contentment in the riches of Jesus.
“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.”
Colossians 3:1
Christians are called to a different life.
When you got saved, you submitted to Jesus as Lord.
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?Luke 6:46
When you got saved, you surrendered to the Kingdom of Jesus.
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:Colossians 1:13
This isn’t a bad thing, it’s a better way.
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.Matthew 6:31-33
Before Christians can reach the world, they must first leave it behind.
We have been set free from the kingdom of the world, we cannot be captivated by it.
Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:Galatians 1:4
Love of the world and love for Jesus are mutually exclusive. Pick a side.
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.1 John 2:15
When we seek the things above, we see the poverty of the things of this world.
Having an eternal perspective should give us a compassion for the lost.
But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.Matthew 9:36
“But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.”
Jude 22–23
Seeing the goodness of Jesus will cause us to lose our appetite for the things of the world.
The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.Proverbs 10:22
And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.John 6:35
Whatever has my heart ultimately has my time, my talent and my treasure.
To set my affection on the things above requires a painful, difficult death to self.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.Galatians 2:20
Death to self requires daily continual renewal.
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.Luke 9:23
This Kingdom life in Jesus is real and powerful, but so is remaining sin.
Contentment comes, not from the things of this world, but an eternal perspective.
Fixation on this world is a diversionary tactic of our enemy.
Living for the things of the world shows an ignorance of the riches of Jesus.
1If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:1-4
