This is God's Body: Stewarding the Temple
Pastor Anthony King· August 31, 2025
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20

The Law forbade cutting and marking of the flesh, but we aren’t under the law.
Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.Leviticus 19:28
Do I want people to see me, or do I want people to see Jesus?
He must increase, but I must decrease.John 3:30
Is this what God wants or is this what I want?
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.Romans 8:5
Will this communicate holiness or worldliness? Does this help me identify with Jesus or identify with the world?
Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:2 Corinthians 6:3
Does this help me be a better Christian and move me closer to the person God has called me to be?
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.1 Corinthians 10:23
Would it have been appropriate in Old Testament times for individuals to decorate and mark the temple in a way that fit with their own personality and interests?
Gluttony
Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)Philippians 3:17-19
Gluttony: extravagant indulgence of the appetite for food; habitual greed or excess in eating:
Gluttony isn’t just overeating. It’s when we live for food or find comfort in consumption.
Gluttony is idolatry rooted in a misplaced craving for comfort, control, or satisfaction apart from God.
Gluttony often hides in plain sight in Christian culture because it’s socially acceptable.
Gluttony and drunkenness both lead to poverty and disgrace.
Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.Proverbs 23:20-21
Even good things are harmful when taken to excess.
Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.Proverbs 25:16
It’s not as much food as it is unchecked indulgence in pleasure and comfort.
Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.Ezekiel 16:49
Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. Lack of self-control is an indication that we are walking in the flesh.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.Galatians 5:22-23
Exercise and Health Stewardship
Caring for our temple should include regular movement, rest, sleep, intentional eating and preventative care.
Stewarding my health allows me to be fit for service to the Kingdom.
Stewarding my health allows me to more richly enjoy the blessings God has given me.
Stewarding my health allows me to have a greater impact for the Kingdom.
Lack of care for my body is poor stewardship and limits what God can do with my life.
Vices and Bondage: Cigarettes, Vapes, and Tobacco
Is it a sin to be addicted to things that aren’t explicitly in the Bible?
All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.1 Corinthians 6:12
Substances which enslave and damage the body violates our responsibility to personal stewardship and love for others.
If it causes harm, creates dependence, or diminishes your health, it is not of God.
What if I’m not addicted, but use these recreationally?
As we grow in Christian maturity, we must be cognizant not simply of how things affect us, but the effect they have on those we influence.
Caring for and using your body as the temple of the Holy Ghost isn’t about legalism; it’s about lordship.
Ask less, “Is this wrong?” Ask more, “Is this wise?”
Ask less, “Is this allowed?” Ask more, “Is this glorifying?”
19What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
