Messages on questions our church family asked to hear preached, taken straight from the Scriptures.
Pride ruins everything.
Pride creates a sense of entitlement.
Pride makes me the exception to the rule.
A fool despiseth his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.Proverbs 15:5
Pride is frustrated by suffering.
Pride steals God’s glory.
And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.Acts 12:21-23
Pride creates strife and drama.
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.Proverbs 16:18
Pride is our fleshly nature’s default response.
Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.Proverbs 23:9
Pride causes me to trust in myself.
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.Proverbs 12:15
Humility is the antidote to pride.
Humility creates a sense of gratitude and appreciation.
Humility makes me trust the Father more.
Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.Matthew 18:4
Humility is deepened by suffering.
Humility gives God glory.
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:1 Peter 5:6
Humility creates peace and rest.
A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.Proverbs 15:1
Humility requires intentional action.
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.James 4:10
Humility admits that I cannot trust myself.
Humility makes submission easier.
Submission is easy when you get what you want. It’s more difficult when it isn’t or when you don’t understand.
Obeying God is sometimes filled with joy, but often filled with sorrow.
Submission is obeying God, even when it doesn’t bring immediate joy.
Submission is an act of worship. Worship brings praise.
Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man. For thou art the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.Psalm 43:1-4
Submission is setting aside temporary happiness for the promise of exceeding future joy.
Submission isn’t a one-time decision, it’s a continuing commitment.
Submission says, “I’m willing to trust you in this area of my life.” Surrender says, “My life is not my own.”
And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.Luke 9:61-62
A life surrendered is a life that must stay submitted.
When we fully surrender our lives to God, there are situations that will arise that must be fully submitted to God.
If God called you to action, would you obey unconditionally? Is God calling you to action?
36Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. 37And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. 38Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. 39And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. 40And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? 41Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. 42He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. 43And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. 44And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Matthew 26:36-44
