This sermon explores the relationship between science and Scripture, emphasizing that both can complement each other when viewed through a biblical worldview. It reminds believers that while science informs the mind, only God’s Word transforms the heart and answers life’s ultimate questions.
“Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.”
Proverbs 9:6
The series
Messages on questions our church family asked to hear preached, taken straight from the Scriptures.
Noah Webster (1828): Science is, in a general sense, knowledge, or certain knowledge; the comprehension or understanding of truth or facts by the mind. The science of God must be perfect.
Dictionary.Com tells us that Science is: a branch of knowledge or study dealing with a body of facts or truths systematically arranged and showing the operation of general laws.
systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation.
any of the branches of natural or physical science.
systematized knowledge in general.
knowledge, as of facts or principles; knowledge gained by systematic study.
a particular branch of knowledge.

Science and Scripture are compatible and complementary only through the proper lens of faith in God and His Word.
Significance of Knowledge
Through Scripture we establish a relationship with God through his Son Jesus Christ and one of the outgrowths of seeking a greater relationship with Him is having access to more knowledge than those who do not know God.
Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the LORD understand all things.Proverbs 28:5
As we grow in grace and the knowledge of our Savior, our hearts are turned to glorify God in all we say and do. Only then can our lives be fulfilled.
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Seeking to know more of this life for the sake of “knowing more about this life” and how it appeals to us, leads to self-gratification and self-exaltation but leaves you empty and wanting more.
For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.Ecclesiastes 2:26
And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.Ecclesiastes 12:12
Snare of Knowledge
For some science, secular intelligence, and the fruitless pursuit of self-fulfillment have only led to sorrow and a sense of nothingness in their soul.
For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.Ecclesiastes 1:18
For others who have dedicated their lives to science and an endeavor of disproving Intelligent design, they have equated the gaining of information/ discovery with intelligence which has led them to arrogance and condescension.
There is also a snare of learning about the discoveries of science and their complement to Scripture is to look at yourself very highly while looking down on others.
Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.1 Corinthians 8:1
But let’s be honest, any one of us could have a tremendous understanding of Bible Truth and look for opportunities to tell everyone how much we know.
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.Romans 12:3
Stewardship of Knowledge
And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure.Isaiah 33:6
We don’t learn about science or Scripture for the sake of learning. We do it for the sake of obeying the Lord and pleasing Him in all we do.
The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.Deuteronomy 29:29
We are supposed to study Scripture with the intent of giving an answer of our hope to someone who is living without hope. There are more smart people in the world than truly spiritual people.
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:1 Peter 3:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.2 Timothy 2:15-16
In many cases, both Christianity and Science are religions that require faith. Each has those who are dedicated to spreading their belief and those who don’t.
In reality both the Bible and Science are complimentary to one another. However, in the event that one contradicts the other, the Bible is the final authority on truth, life, and eternity. Only Scripture answers the big questions of our existence.
Science may inform our minds, but only Scripture transforms our hearts.
Don’t be threatened by what you don’t know, just trust God for it. But using the gift of observational science to discover the eternal creativity of God will certainly humble your heart.
6Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding. 7He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot. 8Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. 9Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. 10The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. Proverbs 9:6-10
