“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”
Philippians 1:6
The series
A Study of the Book of Philippians
Soteriology: The area of Christian theology focused on the saving work of Christ including the issues of atonement, grace, human nature, sin, and resurrection. The term derives from the Greek sōtēria meaning “salvation.”
Justification: A legal term related to the idea of guilt vs. innocence. Justification refers to the divine act whereby God makes humans, who are sinful, guilty and therefore worthy of condemnation, acceptable before a God who is holy and righteous. More appropriately described as “justification by grace through faith.” Justification is the opposite of condemnation.
Justification is the beautiful exchange. God placed my sin upon Jesus and He placed Jesus’s righteousness upon me.
Justification gives me a right standing before God.
We are justified by grace.
Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:Romans 3:24
We are justified by faith.
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.Romans 5:1-2
We are justified by Jesus’ blood.
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.Romans 5:9
Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.Hebrews 9:20-22
#We are only saved once and that’s good enough. You did nothing to gain your salvation, therefore you can do nothing to keep it.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.John 5:24
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.John 6:37-40
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.John 10:28-29
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.Romans 5:9
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.Romans 8:1
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.Romans 8:15-17
To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.Galatians 4:5-7
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.Ephesians 1:13-14
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.Ephesians 4:30
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.Hebrews 7:25
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.1 Peter 1:3-5
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.1 John 5:11-13
“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,”
Jude 24
Salvation gives us:
The forgiveness of sins Freedom from the power of sin A new beginning and a new purpose The promise of eternal life Deliverance from wrath and punishment to come Adoption into the family of God Access to the Father through prayer A new family in the body of Christ The indwelling of the Holy Spirit Access to the promises of God’s Word
Genuine salvation can never be lost.
True believers will be divinely preserved and will faithfully persevere because they are saved and kept by God’s power, not their own.
Salvation is given freely, but it cost God everything.
Salvation is why Jesus came. It’s a big deal.
Salvation is a gift. The moment you have done something to earn it, it is no longer a gift.
Salvation is for certain.
If you are not saved, be saved today.
If you are saved, share the gift with someone this week.
Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: Philippians 1:6
