A Study of the Book of Philippians
Our life perspective determines the lens in which we view life.
Our lives are not our own.
Our goal is not the advancement of self.
(For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)Philippians 3:18-19
Our goal is the glory of God.
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.Revelation 4:11
The impact of our life is extended when we invest in others.
While serving self brings short-term happiness, serving others brings shared, lasting joy.
Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all. For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me.Philippians 2:17-18
The unselfish Christian will always be concerned with the well-being of others.
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.3 John 1:2-4
What kills our usefulness to Jesus?
Selfishness Entanglements with the world (materialism, status, media) Desire for acceptance Secret sin Carnality Lack of desire for spiritual things Love of comfort
While unselfish Christianity should be the norm, unfortunately, it is often an anomaly.
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:Philippians 2:5-7
How to Have a Massive, Lasting Impact
Walk in humility. Be willing to be a slave. Ensure your lifestyle points people to Jesus. Invest in the lives of others, if even for a moment. Develop the heart and mind of Jesus. Adjust your perspective and expectations, as needed.
16Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. 17Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all. 18For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me. 19But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. 20For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. 21For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s. Philippians 2:16-21
