Think This, Not That
Pastor Anthony King· October 31, 2021
Philippians 4:8
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
Philippians 4:8
The series
A Study of the Book of Philippians
We must view life from a biblical perspective.
The unsaved mind is depraved.
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;Romans 1:28
Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.1 Timothy 6:5
For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.Romans 8:6-7
The unsaved mind cannot discern spiritual things.
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.1 Corinthians 2:14
You cannot have a proper perspective on life without being saved.
Proper thinking comes from focusing on truth.
Truth is not relative, truth is objective.
Truth is not based on emotion.
I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.John 12:46-48
God is the author of truth.
He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.Deuteronomy 32:4
Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.Psalm 25:5
Satan is the father of lies.
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.John 8:44
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;2 Corinthians 10:5
Think on what is true. (True)
Think on what is honorable. (Honest)
Think on what is righteous. (Just)
Think on what is pure. (Pure)
Think on what is attractive to God. (Lovely)
Think on what is highly regarded. (Good Report)
Our thought wills bring us peace or steal our joy.
Our thoughts guide our words.
Our thoughts guide our actions.
Our thoughts guide our motives.
Excusing improper thinking sets us up for disaster.
We must feed our heart with the things that strengthen our faith.
Am I examining my life from a biblical perspective?
Do I view life from an eternal perspective or a long-term perspective?
Is there any sinful thoughts that I need to repent of?
Am I appropriately nourishing my heart and mind?
Have I adopted a wrong perspective that is stealing my peace or joy?
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8
