The series
A Study of the Book of Philippians
Joy is happiness based on spiritual realities.
Our praise is not based on our circumstances, but on the goodness of God.
There are times we can praise based on our circumstances for sure!
We are not immune to suffering and difficulty.
Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:1 Peter 4:12
We must praise God in good times and bad.
But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.Psalm 13:5
And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.Acts 5:41
We are not commanded to rejoice in our own feelings, but rejoice in the Lord.
Joy comes from submission to the lordship of Jesus.
According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.Philippians 1:20
Joy comes from walking in obedience.
My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes.Psalm 119:171
We can rejoice in the sovereignty of God.
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:19
For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.Psalm 84:11
Knowing God more will lead to greater praise.
Spiritual stability is directly related to how a person thinks about God.
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.Psalm 1:1-3
Rejoice and praising God is expected in every situation.
Praising God is a lifestyle choice. “Chairete (rejoice) is a present imperative, calling believers to the continual, habitual practice of rejoicing.”
Let your gentle spirit be known unto all men.
Worry steals our joy.
We must protect our joy at all costs.
Loss of joy is your check engine light.
Praise God as part of your prayer time.
Praise God throughout the day.
Praise God with other Christians.
Praise God in front of unbelievers.
Sing praise music to God.
