A Study of the Book of Philippians
Contentment flows from a heart of gratitude for what God has given.
Contentment (artarkes): self-supporting, sufficient in oneself, satisfied.
But godliness with contentment is great gain.1 Timothy 6:6
And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.1 Timothy 6:8
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.Hebrews 13:5
Contentment is not the same as indifference.
Discontentment, a continual desire for more and materialism are symptoms of a carnal heart.
How to Prepare Your Heart for Contentment
Praise God in everything.
Refuse to adopt a mindset of anxiety and worry.
Pray and give thanks.
Allow the peace of God to rule your heart.
Think on the things that are true, honorable, right, pure, attractive to God and are well thought of.
Obey God in every area of your life.
We must trust in God’s sovereignty.
For our needs and our wants, our trust is in the Lord.
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.Matthew 6:31-32
__Wait __on God’s timing.
Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.Psalm 27:14
Trust in what God provides. (Providence)
The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.Psalm 121:5-8
We become discontent when we want to be in control.
We must be satisfied with little.
And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.1 Timothy 6:8
When we look at life from a humanistic view, we need more.
When we look at life from a biblical view, we need less.
Contentment is a heart issue and a perspective issue.
We must remember the grace of God when we have more.
Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;1 Timothy 6:17
Our true satisfaction is in Jesus.
When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.Colossians 3:4
We must live a life where our satisfaction is disconnected from our circumstances.
He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.Isaiah 40:29-31
“I can do all things” is offered in context of suffering and having nothing aside from Jesus.
10But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity. 11Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. 12I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Philippians 4:10-13
