Jeremiah 18:1-6
This sermon, based on Jeremiah 18:1–6, reminds us that God is the sovereign Potter who lovingly shapes our lives through trials, surrender, and faith to create something beautiful and purposeful for His glory. It emphasizes the urgency of missions and personal transformation, calling believers to yield to God's refining work and become vessels of honor in His hands.

God is the Sovereign Potter, and we are the clay.
God has the authority and ability to shape our lives as He sees fit, working all things for His glory and our good.
But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.Isaiah 64:8
Just as a potter does not discard marred clay but reshapes it, God does not give up on us despite our flaws.
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;2 Corinthians 4:7-9
Surrender is essential for God’s shaping process.
True surrender involves releasing control and trusting God’s plan, even when it is uncomfortable or unclear.
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.Proverbs 3:5-7
Resistance to God’s work in our lives leads to stagnation, but yielding allows Him to create something beautiful and purposeful.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.Romans 12:1-2
Faith is often uncomfortable, but it is the only thing that pleases God.
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.Hebrews 11:6
God uses life’s challenges to refine us on His wheel.
Trials and difficulties are tools in God’s hands to remove impurities like pride, selfishness or fear.
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.James 1:2-4
The potter’s wheel represents life’s constant motion, where God works through circumstances to mature us spiritually.
Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:Philippians 1:6
God’s purpose is to make us vessels of honor for His use.
God’s ultimate goal is not just to fix what is broken but to transform us into vessels that reflect His glory.
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.2 Timothy 2:20-21
Even when the process feels painful or slow, God’s hands remain steady, shaping us with love and care.
The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.Psalm 138:8
Surrender all to God daily.
Remain pliable under pressure.
Trust in God’s timing.
Seek transformation, not perfection.
1The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, 2Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. 3Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. 4And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. 5Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 6O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel. Jeremiah 18:1-6
