This world is not our home.
Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;1 Peter 2:11
Settle in. You’re going to be here for a while.
The temptation is to live a life of comfort and ease.
The temptation is to become apathetic and lazy.
The temptation is to see our waiting time as wasted time.
The alternative is to identify what God wants us to do and get to work.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.Ephesians 2:10
Make this city a better place.
Our own well-being is inseparable from the well-being of our city.
And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.Jeremiah 29:7
Find opportunities to have influence and serve others.
For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.Mark 10:45
Pray for Honolulu.
And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized. Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.Acts 18:8-10
Don’t buy into the message of this world.
There is a counterfeit peace being peddled by the American dream.
He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.Ecclesiastes 5:10
We are enticed by the world to make this our home.
We are encouraged by the world to believe all we have is what we see.
Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.Haggai 1:6
God has a distinct plan for His people.
God desires that the world would see His glory, turn to Him and worship Him.
For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.Habakkuk 2:14
Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.Psalm 96:3
God desires that we would show His glory, point others to Him and openly worship Him.
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:1 Peter 2:9
God has a full, future blessing for His people that will come to fruition.
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.Jeremiah 29:11
Seek the Lord and do His will.
We will not find God and do His will with a half-hearted effort.
God expects more from us than spare time and spare change.
We are to spend the rest of this life preparing ourselves and others for the next life.
Pray fervently.
Serve sacrificially.
Proclaim boldly.
4Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon; 5Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them; 6Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished. 7And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace. 8For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed. 9For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the LORD. 10For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. 11For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. 12Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. 13And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. 14And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive. Jeremiah 29:4-14
