The book of John
Ready to play
This sermon from John 4:31–38 reminds believers that Jesus is already at work in the hearts of people around us and invites us to join Him in His mission. The true joy of the Christian life is found in doing God’s will and participating in His harvest. As we sow, serve, and share the Gospel, we rejoice together in seeing lives transformed by God’s grace.
“In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.”
John 4:31
The series
Messages from Easter, Christmas, New Year, missions and anniversary Sundays, and guest preachers.
The harvest is ready because Jesus has already prepared the work.
Spiritual readiness is not about waiting for an opportunity “one day,” but realizing that Jesus is already working in the lives of those around me.
And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.Acts 16:14
The Lord goes before His people to make a way in unlikely places and in unexpected ways.
I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron:Isaiah 45:2
Jesus invites His followers to join in a work that He Himself is accomplishing.
We are sent to reap what others, including Jesus have sown. God calls us to join Him in His ongoing mission.
We are co-laborers with God in a field He owns and tends.
For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.1 Corinthians 3:9
We simply sow, water and tend the soil; God brings the increase.
I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.1 Corinthians 3:6
The true satisfaction for believers is found in doing God’s will and finishing His work.
We should find purpose and fulfillment in engaging in God’s redemptive action.
I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.Psalm 40:8
Serving Jesus with joy brings fulfillment and blessing.
A Psalm of praise. Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.Psalm 100:1-2
The harvest produces rejoicing, as sowers and reapers share in the results of God’s grace.
Both the one who plants the seed and the one who gathers the harvest celebrate together what God has done.
When even one sinner repents, there is joy in Heaven.
Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.Luke 15:10
Be on the lookout to share your story. God is already preparing the hearts and circumstances of those around you.
Joining Jesus in His ongoing work through prayer, service, and bold witness should be viewed as a privilege. You’ve been drafted to Team Jesus.
Find true fulfillment by having a passion for souls and a love for the Gospel.
Celebrate every sign of spiritual movement in those around you, giving glory to God for both the sowing and the harvest and rejoice as others come to faith.
31In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. 32But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. 33Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? 34Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. 35Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. 36And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. 37And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth. 38I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours. John 4:31-38
