The series
Messages from Easter, Christmas, New Year, missions and anniversary Sundays, and guest preachers.
This powerful story is a story of compassion in action, where seeing someone in desperate need compels one to go beyond personal convenience and offer life-changing help.
Religion sees our need and does not help.
Religion focuses on rules and traditions.
Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:Isaiah 29:13
Religion never truly reaches our deepest need.
Religious people see our need and do not help.
Religious people are fallible and will not always be reliable.
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;Romans 3:23
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.1 John 1:8
Religious people never truly reach our deepest need.
Jesus sees our need and has compassion.
The hero of this story is the last person we would look to for help.
Jesus sees our state and doesn’t turn away.
But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.Matthew 9:36
Jesus sees our wounds and binds them up.
He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.Psalm 147:3
Jesus sees our helplessness and picks us up.
The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.Psalm 145:14
Jesus sees our greatest need and pays our way.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.Romans 5:8
Jesus is our Good Samaritan.
Jesus gives us an example of how to love others.
30And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. 33But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, 34And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. 36Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? 37And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise. Luke 10:30-37
