Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 102 of 150
Do You Really Love God?
Pastor Anthony King· September 15, 2024
Romans 8:28-29
The best way to show your love for God is an obedient life lived according to His Word. This sermon asks a searching question: do you really love God?
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.”
Romans 8:28-29
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
If we love God, we will obey Him.
If ye love me, keep my commandments.John 14:15
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.John 14:23-24
If we love God, we will desire to spend time with Him.
To the chief Musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah. As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?Psalm 42:1-2
If we love God, we will love His Word.
The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.Psalm 119:72
O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.Psalm 119:97
I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.Psalm 138:2
If we love God, we will trust Him more.
O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.Psalm 31:23
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.Proverbs 3:5
If we love God, we will love others.
Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.1 John 4:11
If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.1 John 4:20-21
If we love God, we will be faithful to Him.
Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.1 Corinthians 4:2
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.1 John 2:15
If we love God, it will be reflected in our worship and praise.
O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.Psalm 95:6
If we love God, we will seek His presence.
Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:Isaiah 55:6
If we love God, we will walk in humility.
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.James 4:10
If we love God, we will love Jesus’ church.
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;Ephesians 5:25
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.Acts 20:28
If we love God, we will delight in being known as His children.
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.1 John 3:1
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.Romans 1:16
If we love God, we will defend His honor.
“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”
Jude 3
Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel. Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face. I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother’s children. For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.Psalm 69:6-9
If we love God, we will hate what He hates.
The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.Proverbs 8:13
These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.Proverbs 6:16-19
If we love God, we will long for the return of Jesus.
For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:Philippians 3:20
If we love God, we will walk in holiness and repentance.
But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.1 Peter 1:15-16
Loving God has little to do with our feelings about God.
Loving God is about our heart.
Loving God begins in our heart and flows into our thoughts, our words and our actions.
28And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Romans 8:28-29
