Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 119 of 150
The Beauty of Mercy in Light of Wrath
Pastor Anthony King· July 27, 2025
Romans 10:21
God's wrath is His just and holy response to sin, yet He patiently offers mercy and invites repentance. The weight of His wrath magnifies the beauty of His mercy and makes salvation through Christ a gift of indescribable grace.
“But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.”
Romans 10:21
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
God’s Wrath Defined
Wrath of God: An expression of divine displeasure with human sin. The free, subjective and holy response of God to sin and to the evil and wickedness exhibited by creatures in opposition to God.
God’s wrath is His calculated and intentional action against sin and His desire for justice.
God’s wrath flows from His love for justice.
Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.Psalm 89:14
God is not wrath. If there were no sin, there would be no wrath.
God’s wrath is revealed against all ungodliness and unrighteousness.
God’s wrath is not arbitrary but is directed against all who suppress the truth by unrighteousness, leaving humanity without excuse.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:Romans 1:18-20
The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.Ezekiel 18:20
The outpouring of wrath is seen in God “giving them over” to their sinful desires, resulting in spiritual and moral degradation.
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:Romans 1:24
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:Romans 1:26
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;Romans 1:28
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.Galatians 6:7
God patiently extends His mercy to the disobedient.
Despite persistent rebellion, God continually offers mercy, stretching out His hands to invite repentance.
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.2 Peter 3:9
But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.Psalm 86:15
God’s patience is not weakness, but a deliberate act to give space for repentance and salvation.
Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?Romans 2:4
It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.Lamentations 3:22
The terror of God’s wrath magnifies the glory of His mercy.
The certainty and severity of God’s wrath highlights the greatness of His mercy toward those who believe.
Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.2 Corinthians 5:11
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,Ephesians 2:4
God’s mercy is not owed but freely given, making its offer to sinners truly remarkable.
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;Titus 3:5
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.Hebrews 4:16
We were once enemies under wrath, but now we are the sons and daughters of God and the friends of Jesus.
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.Romans 5:10
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.1 John 3:1
God’s longsuffering is evident in His reluctance to judge immediately.
God endures with much longsuffering even those who are “vessels of wrath,” delaying judgment to fulfill His redemptive purposes.
What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:Romans 9:22
And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?Luke 18:7
God’s forbearance is an opportunity for repentance, not a sign of indifference toward sin.
Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?Ezekiel 33:11
Let the reality of God’s wrath awaken a holy fear and reverence, leading to sincere repentance and faith in Christ.
Respond to God’s patient mercy by turning from sin and embracing the salvation He freely offers.
Extend mercy and patience to others, reflecting the longsuffering character of God in your relationships.
Proclaim both the terror of God’s wrath and the greatness of His mercy, urging others to flee from judgment and receive His grace.
God’s wrath and mercy are not contradictory but complementary.
But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people. Romans 10:21
