Romans 2:1-3

Romans 2:1
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Each person is individually responsible to God for their sin. No one gets a free pass.
There is no exemption for culture or ethnicity.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.Romans 1:16
There is no exemption for family heritage.
The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.Ezekiel 18:20-21
There is no exemption for ignorance.
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:Romans 1:20
Self-righteousness is foolishness.
We underestimate God’s expectation of holiness.
And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up. Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.Luke 18:18-23
We underestimate the depths of our own sinfulness.
Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?Matthew 7:1-3
Hypocrisy in the life of a Christian is difficult to self-diagnose. Hypocrisy: the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one’s own behavior does not conform; the practice of claiming to have higher standards or more laudable beliefs than is the case. The hiding of interior wickedness under the appearance of virtue.
The word for hypocrite in the Bible means “to play a part” or “to feign or pretend.”
Hypocrisy is not a Christian who sins and repents. Hypocrisy is a Christian who, sins, hides it, deceives others, all the while creating an illusion of righteousness.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.Matthew 23:25-27
Hypocrisy causes us to hold others to a higher standard than we hold ourselves.
Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.Matthew 7:1-5
Judging by anyone other than God is condemned.
We cannot make a complete judgment based simply off what we see.
Human judgment is based on prejudice and partial perception.
While we can observe sin and call it what it is, we cannot condemn or pass judgment based off our limited knowledge.
No one will escape the judgment of God.
While only God can judge, He has given us the criteria by which He will judge.
1Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. 2But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. 3And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? Romans 2:1-3
