Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 128 of 150
Grace-Shaped Humility
Pastor Anthony King· October 26, 2025
Romans 12:3-5
A sermon on Romans 12:3-5 and grace-shaped humility. Everything we have is a gift from God, so pride gives way to a sober view of ourselves that values every believer's role in the body of Christ, where we serve one another with humility, unity and gratitude.
“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”
Romans 12:3
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
God’s grace guards us against pride and teaches us to think soberly about ourselves.
Pride destroys everything it touches.
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.Proverbs 16:18
True humility comes from recognizing that all we are and have is by God’s gracious gift, not personal achievement.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.James 1:17
Measuring ourselves by God’s standard, not by comparing with others, leads to sound judgment and humble confidence.
But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.Galatians 6:4
Every believer has a unique, God-given measure of faith to fulfill their role.
God equips each believer with faith specifically suited for their calling and contribution within the body.
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.1 Corinthians 12:7
Recognizing God’s unique role for us sustains both humility and joyful service.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.Ephesians 2:10
Believers are members of one body, united in Christ yet individually distinct.
Each member has a distinct function, but all are necessary for the health and mission of the body.
For the body is not one member, but many.1 Corinthians 12:14
Our differences express the wisdom of God and deepen our dependence on one another.
From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.Ephesians 4:16
We aren’t diverse by artificial means, but by God’s sovereign design.
We belong to one another and are called to serve in interdependence and unity.
Each believer’s life is connected to the lives of others. We are responsible to and for each other.
That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.1 Corinthians 12:25
True Christian community reflects Jesus’ love through mutual support, humility, and service.
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.Philippians 2:3
Kill your pride by focusing on God’s grace as the source of your strengths and gifts.
Embrace your role in the church and serve faithfully.
Build unity by appreciating and depending on the unique gifts and perspectives within the body of Christ.
Practice humility daily, seek opportunities to serve, encourage, and lift up others, reflecting the grace you have received.
Live outward not inward.
3For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. 4For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 5So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Romans 12:3-5
