Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 108 of 150
God’s Sovereign Plan and Israel’s Place
Pastor Anthony King· May 4, 2025
Romans 9:1-13
A sermon on Romans 9:1-13 and God's sovereign plan in choosing a spiritual lineage through faith, not physical descent. It shows how God's truth is revealed by the Holy Spirit and confirmed in the conscience of believers, and calls Christians to carry a deep concern for the lost while living in gratitude for their place in God's family.
“I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,”
Romans 9:1
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
God’s truth is confirmed by the witness of the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit of God bears witness to the truth in our conscience.
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:Romans 8:16
The Holy Spirit guides believers into all truth.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.John 16:13
Truth is not something we invent. Truth comes from God and is revealed by His Word and His Spirit.
Genuine spiritual concern manifests as deep sorrow for the lost.
True love willingly sacrifices self for the salvation of others.
Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.Philippians 2:16-17
Spiritual maturity produces a burden for those who don’t know Jesus.
But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.Matthew 9:36
They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.Psalm 126:5-6
When I mature in my love for Jesus, I love what He loves and hate what He hates.
God bestows unique privileges upon those in covenant relationship with Him.
The Lord establishes His covenants as expressions of His faithfulness.
Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;Deuteronomy 7:9
Divine privileges carry corresponding responsibilities.
You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.Amos 3:2
God’s promises are fulfilled through His chosen line of faith, not merely physical descent.
The Lord recognizes spiritual lineage above natural heritage.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.John 1:12-13
God’s election operates through the principle of faith response.
That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.Ephesians 2:12-13
Our heart should be heavy for those who do not know Jesus.
Eternal life is now available to all, but most still do not know.
Express praise and live a life of gratitude for your place in the family of God.
1I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, 2That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. 3For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: 4Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; 5Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. 6Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: 7Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. 8That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. 9For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. 10And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; 11(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) 12It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. 13As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
