Romans 5:12
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
Romans 5:12
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
The Garden of Eden was a place of perfection and peace with God.
God gave Adam one commandment.
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.Genesis 2:16-17
Adam had the freedom to rule the entire earth.
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.Genesis 1:28
Death was promised for disobedience.
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.Genesis 2:16-17
Adam introduced sin to the world.
Sin has its origins with Satan who rebelled against God in Heaven.
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.Isaiah 14:12-15
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.1 John 3:8
While Eve first took of the fruit, Adam was held responsible.
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.Genesis 3:6
Adam had directly received God’s commandment before Eve was formed.
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.Genesis 2:16-17
Adam was to provide leadership and protection for Eve.
For Adam was first formed, then Eve.1 Timothy 2:13
Eve was deceived, while Adam knowingly disobeyed.
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.1 Timothy 2:14
Adam’s sin nature has been passed along to all men.
When Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden, he sinned not only as a man but on behalf of mankind.
Because we are descendants of Adam, we are sinners.
Because we are sinners, we will die.
But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.James 1:14-15
Death is the consequence of sin.
Death is separation.
We are born spiritually dead with our spirit separate from God.
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:Ephesians 2:1-2
We will experience a physical death when our soul separates from our physical body.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:Hebrews 9:27
We are deserving of an eternal death where our soul is separated from God in Hell for eternity.
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.Revelation 21:8
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.Revelation 20:14-15
When we receive Jesus as Savior, our spirit is made alive.
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:Ephesians 2:1-2
Our physical death is only the beginning of our eternal life.
We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.2 Corinthians 5:8
The only hope for avoiding eternal death is to receive everlasting life.
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on > him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” —John 5:24
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Romans 5:12
