Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 113 of 150
The Tragedy of Zeal Without Knowledge
Pastor Anthony King· June 15, 2025
Romans 10:1-4
Zeal needs the knowledge of God's truth, and Israel's misguided passion is a warning. This sermon calls believers to pray for others' salvation, reject self-righteousness, and rest in the righteousness that comes only through faith in Jesus Christ.
“Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.”
Romans 10:1
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Paul’s deepest desire and prayer is for Israel’s salvation.
God’s heart is for all to repent and be saved.
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.2 Peter 3:9
We should pray for the salvation of others.
Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.Romans 10:1
“God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you” —1 Samuel 12:23
Israel possesses zeal for God, but its misguided.
Religious zeal apart from knowledge leads to spiritual error.
Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.Philippians 3:6
You can be sincere, but sincerely wrong.
Sincerity in worship is not enough. God seeks those who worship in spirit and in truth.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.John 4:24
Seeking to establish their own righteousness, Israel has not submitted to the righteousness of God.
Our own righteousness is insufficient.
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.Isaiah 64:6
The righteousness of God is received by faith.
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:Romans 3:22
Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
Jesus is the fulfillment of the law.
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.Matthew 5:17
We are made righteous in Jesus.
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.2 Corinthians 5:21
Pray daily for the salvation of others.
Pursue knowledge of God alongside zeal.
Reject self-righteousness and rest in Jesus’ finished work.
Share the truth of the Gospel, that Jesus is the only way of salvation.
1Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. 2For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. 3For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. 4For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. Romans 10:1-4
