Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 142 of 150
How Can I Help?
Pastor Anthony King· July 26, 2026
Romans 15:1-7
A sermon on Romans 15:1-7: spiritual maturity shows in carrying the burdens of others instead of pleasing ourselves. Following Jesus' example, believers set aside personal preferences and serve with humility, patience and love, and a church that welcomes one another displays God's glory through real unity.
“We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.”
Romans 15:1
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
If Jesus has made you strong, He expects you to carry someone else’s load.
Strong believers have a duty to support and uphold weaker believers in their struggles.
Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.Galatians 6:1-2
Living to please yourself does not fit with following Jesus.
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.Luke 9:23
Jesus calls you to lay down your preferences to build others up.
Your goal in pleasing others is their spiritual good, not their fleshly comfort.
Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.Philippians 2:4
We’re called to mind our own business when it comes to criticism but look on other people’s business to bless and serve them.
Building others up is everyday Christianity, not a side ministry.
From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.Ephesians 4:16
Jesus shows you what it looks like to refuse self-pleasing and absorb reproach for others.
It’s not about doing better, it’s about being like Jesus.
Jesus consistently chose the Father’s will and our salvation over His own comfort.
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.Luke 22:42
Jesus willingly took on Himself the insult and shame that belonged to others.
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.1 Peter 2:24
As you serve others instead of yourself, God draws us together into a unified family that puts His glory on display.
God Himself supplies the patience and encouragement you need to live in unity.
Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.Romans 12:16
Welcoming each other the way Jesus welcomed you brings God visible glory.
Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation:Philippians 2:29
Pick one person and help carry something specific they’re facing.
Quietly meet a need that makes someone else’s load lighter this week.
When obedience brings misunderstanding or criticism, see it as a small share in Jesus’ reproach.
Intentionally welcome one believer who doesn’t naturally “fit” with you.
1We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. 3For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. 4For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. 5Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: 6That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God. Romans 15:1-7
