Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 148 of 150
It's Not About You
Pastor Anthony King· September 13, 2026
Romans 16:1-16
A sermon from Romans 16: it's not about you. Christians show sacrificial love by serving alongside others in the work of the Gospel, using their gifts, homes and resources to strengthen the church instead of watching from the sidelines, so the church becomes a true family centered on Jesus.
“I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea:”
Romans 16:1
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Choose sacrificial, risk-taking love for Gospel work.
Gospel partnership means being willing to pay a price.
But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.Acts 20:24
Sacrificial love reflects the heart of Jesus Himself.
Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.1 John 3:16
Open your home for Jesus and His church.
Your home is one of the best tools you have for making disciples.
And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.Acts 2:46-47
Hospitality is not a personality trait, it’s an obedience issue.
Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.Romans 12:13
See yourself as a helper in Jesus, not a spectator.
Every believer is gifted to serve, not just to sit.
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.1 Corinthians 12:4-7
Real love shows up in practical service, not just words.
For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.Galatians 5:13
Be a part of genuine, holy affection in the church family.
Gospel community should feel like real family, not a weekly event.
Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;Romans 12:10
Our affection must be holy, appropriate, and encouraging.
Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.1 Thessalonians 5:10-11
Commit to church membership and serving in tangible, meaningful ways.
Use your home for Gospel fellowship and encouragement.
Examine your priorities in light of their eternal impact.
Practice intentional, encouraging Christian affection each week.
1I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: 2That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also. 3Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: 4Who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles. 5Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Salute my wellbeloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia unto Christ. 6Greet Mary, who bestowed much labour on us. 7Salute Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen, and my fellowprisoners, who are of note among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me. 8Greet Amplias my beloved in the Lord. 9Salute Urbane, our helper in Christ, and Stachys my beloved. 10Salute Apelles approved in Christ. Salute them which are of Aristobulus’ household. 11Salute Herodion my kinsman. Greet them that be of the household of Narcissus, which are in the Lord. 12Salute Tryphena and Tryphosa, who labour in the Lord. Salute the beloved Persis, which laboured much in the Lord. 13Salute Rufus chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine. 14Salute Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, Patrobas, Hermes, and the brethren which are with them. 15Salute Philologus, and Julia, Nereus, and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints which are with them. 16Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you. Romans 16:1-16
