Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 10 of 150
Romans: Not Ashamed of the Gospel
Pastor Anthony King· June 26, 2022
Romans 1:16-17
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”
Romans 1:16-17
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Those who compromise the Gospel do so out of the fear of man.
“The unpopularity of a crucified Christ has prompted many to present a message which is more palatable to the unbeliever, but the removal of the offense of the cross always renders the message ineffective. An inoffensive gospel is also an inoperative gospel. Thus Christianity is wounded most in the house of its friends.”
We must not compromise the Gospel, as it is the only hope for this life and the next.
The Gospel gives us hope and meaning for this life.
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.Romans 5:1-2
The Gospel gives us eternal life.
The Gospel is the power of God.
God has displayed his omnipotence by defeating sin for all who would believe.
For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.Romans 5:19-21
The power of God gives us power over sin.
For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.Romans 6:14
For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:Romans 8:3
The Gospel brings us to salvation.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?Romans 10:13-14
The power of God is manifested by delivering man from eternal death to eternal life.
Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known.Psalm 106:8
God’s provision of salvation shows that we need to be saved and we need a Savior.
The Gospel requires faith.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.Romans 10:9-10
The power of God extends salvation to everyone who comes to God in faith.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.John 3:16
“Salvation is not merely professing to be a Christian, nor is it baptism, moral reform, going to church, receiving sacraments, or living a life of self-discipline and sacrifice. Salvation is believing in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Salvation comes through giving up on one’s own goodness, works, knowledge, and wisdom and trusting in the finished, perfect work of Christ.”
Anyone who comes to God in faith and repentance can be saved.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.Romans 10:13
And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.Revelation 22:17
The Gospel imputes the righteousness of God.
Faith brings salvation which imparts the righteousness of God to the recipient.
Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:Philippians 3:8-9
Justification is the act of God imputing His righteousness to His born-again children.
Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.Romans 5:18-19
The Gospel requires continual, day-by-day faith.
After one is saved, faith must now become a daily way of life.
Are you ashamed of Jesus?
But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.Matthew 10:33
Are you willing to boldly stand for Jesus?
Are you willing to be unashamed of the Gospel?
16For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Romans 1:16-17
