The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
They decided they had a better plan than God.
In the company of people who share the same values, the character of that group will be found out in their collective decisions.
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.Psalm 1:1
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.Hebrews 13:5-6
The Motive behind their Rebellious Heart
They wanted to do things by themselves. They wanted to do things for themselves. They wanted to do things against the commandment of God. In Genesis, its said that cities rise in the era of sinful humankind, when humans attempt to gain security and regain what was lost in Eden without looking to God.
Sin gives us a false sense of protection.
Somehow their disobedient plan gave them a false sense of protection against God’s judgment.
These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.Psalm 50:21
God allowed sin to prosper for a period of time, so that he may cast them down lower than where they began.
Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue; Though he spare it, and forsake it not; but keep it still within his mouth: Yet his meat in his bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him. He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly. He shall suck the poison of asps: the viper’s tongue shall slay him.Job 20:12-16
If we are calculating something upon our own strength, we claim the outcome for ourselves.
God saw what they were doing and uses it to get what He wanted done in the first place.
The punishment testifies of how highly displeased God was with that which these men attempted.
Glory for themselves, without God.
I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.Isaiah 42:8
For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another.Isaiah 48:11

1And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. 2And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 3And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. 4And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. 5And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. 6And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. 7Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. 8So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. 9Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
