“Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?”
Romans 7:1
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
We are no longer bound to the law.
The law no longer has jurisdiction over a person once they have died.
Death with Christ brings an end to the rule of law and condemnation associated with it.
Those without Christ are still subject to the condemnation that comes from the breaking of God’s law.
Being one with Jesus ends our obligation to the law and begins our obligation to Jesus.
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.Galatians 2:16
Because we have died with Christ, the law can no longer condemn us.
For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.Galatians 2:19
Jesus brings a new relationship that is better than the old, as Jesus is superior to the law.
The law stirred up our sinful desires.
Union with Christ brings fruit unto God, whereas slavery to the flesh brought no fruit and left us ashamed.
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.John 15:4-5
What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.Romans 6:21-22
We now serve Jesus freely by grace, not out of obligation to the law.
This new way of serving God is not based on our own efforts, but on the transforming power of the Holy Spirit working within us.
Union with Christ changes our actions and our attitudes.
Jesus wants all of us.
Being one with Christ gives Him exclusive rights to every part of us.
We should check our hearts and ensure that our motives are pure.
1Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? 2For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. 3So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. 4Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. 5For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. 6But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter. Romans 7:1-6
