The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
The sacrifice of Jesus for the sins of mankind gives glory to God.
While we are the beneficiaries of God’s grace, mercy and love, God exists for God and for His glory.
Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.Isaiah 45:21-23
We misunderstand Christianity when we forget that God does not exist for us, but we exist for Him.
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.Revelation 4:11
Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake.Psalm 115:1
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.Romans 12:1
The cross declares God’s righteousness.
God could not violate his righteous law.
He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.Deuteronomy 32:4
Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.Ezekiel 18:4
While our sin put Jesus on the cross, the cross at the same time is our only means of forgiveness.
If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.Hebrews 6:6
The cross is not a way for unholy men to accept a holy God, but rather a means for a holy God to be able to accept unholy men.
God instituted the Law as a means to temporarily appease His wrath until the propitiation of Jesus.
The Law could not save, but it demonstrated a faith in God, His promises and the coming Messiah.
But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.Galatians 3:22-24
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.Galatians 3:11
Old Testament believers were saved by faith in a coming Messiah and we are saved by faith in a risen Savior. It’s still all faith in Jesus.
By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.Hebrews 11:7
God’s forbearance is His patient mercy in temporarily withholding His punishment.
God was patient with Israel, but now requires faith in Jesus.
Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.Acts 13:38-39
And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:Acts 17:30
God is patient with mankind and temporarily withholds his wrath.
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.2 Peter 3:9
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.1 Timothy 2:4
God will not withhold His wrath forever.
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?2 Peter 3:10-12
Does my life give glory to God?
Am I living for Jesus or like He exists for me?
Do I misuse or take advantage of God’s grace and mercy?
Who do I know that needs to know of God’s grace?
23For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Romans 3:23-26
