Romans: The Power of the Gospel Message 149 of 150
The Devil Is a Liar
Pastor Anthony King· September 20, 2026
Romans 16:17-20
A sermon on Romans 16:17-20: the devil is a liar. Christians learn to recognize false teachers, avoid their influence, and stay grounded in biblical truth, focusing on what is good, and they can stand confidently in God's grace because Satan's final defeat is certain.
“And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.”
Romans 16:20
The series
Verse by verse through Paul’s letter to the church at Rome: the Gospel of God’s righteousness, from our ruin in sin to life lived as a living sacrifice.
Recognize and mark false teachers.
Know the truth well enough to spot what is counterfeit.
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.Colossians 2:6-8
Take responsibility to “mark” those who twist the truth.
Avoid the influence of false teachers completely.
Distance yourself from teachers who do not truly serve Jesus.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.Ephesians 5:11
Refuse to be impressed by “good words and fair speeches.”
The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.Proverbs 14:15
Grow wise in what is good and stay simple concerning evil.
Become an expert in obeying what is good, not in analyzing every error.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.Romans 12:2
Stay innocent in the practice of evil, even while understanding how sin works.
Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.Matthew 10:16
False teaching is orchestrated by Satan himself to turn people away from the truth.
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.John 8:44
Trust that God will ultimately crush Satan and protect His people.
Rest in the certainty that Satan’s defeat is guaranteed.
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.Genesis 3:15
Depend on the grace of Jesus to stand firm in the battle.
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.Ephesians 6:10
Get grounded in sound doctrine so you can recognize error quickly.
Be discerning about who you listen to, follow, and share.
Invest more energy in doing what is good than in chasing every controversy.
Face spiritual deception and warfare with confidence in Jesus’ victory.
17Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. 19For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil. 20And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. Romans 16:17-20
